Clients & Testimonials

Charles Alday was the Operational Excellence Manager for the last five years of his thirty-year career at Colonial Pipeline Company. He continues to do similar work with pipeline companies, and organizations outside the pipeline industry. His company has completed projects that improve safety and operational performance. This was done by building a grassroots safety advocate program to enhance the culture, by writing and implementing a performance coaching program, and organizational consulting on a number of issues. Current year work includes team development for an operations organization and a human factors management plan for a pipeline controllers. Charles Alday, due to his expertise and reputation, makes speeches and presentations to many groups about operational excellence, lessons learned, error management, and personal excellence.

Here is what a few people say about Charles and his work:

“One of the most valuable things that Charles Alday did for Colonial Pipeline was to teach the organization the importance of learning from near miss incidents. He then implemented a process and helped to develop a culture that encouraged and rewarded people for reporting near misses so the lessons could be shared by all Colonial employees. This changed attitude and new process contributed significantly to the achievement of best in class safety performance for Colonial.”
David Lemmon, Former President and CEO, Colonial Pipeline Co.

The Dirty Dozen Causes of Errors and Accidents are an excellent tool. They parallel the human performance improvement training of INPO being promoted in the Department of Energy(DOE). You did an outstanding job with the presentation. I particularly liked how you related the examples to specific lessons learned from the DOE Lessons Learned Program.”
Raymond H. Blowitski, Acting Director of Office of Analysis in Office of Health, Safety, and Security of DOE; Program Manager for DOE Operating Experience Program.

“After our discussion about fatigue and the effects of shift work, I want you to know I changed my diet. I’m eating healthy food and avoiding junk food at work. As a result, I’ve lost 35 pounds! Thanks!”
Pipeline Controller

“Charles Alday has done an excellent job putting together the book titled Meeting the Challenge of Excellence. As you read, you will notice this book goes hand in hand with our new mission for our organization.”
Butch Lee, District Leader, Colonial Pipeline Co.

“Thank you for your interesting and informative presentation on The Dirty Dozen Causes of Errors and Accidents at our workshop. Your enthusiasm, ingenuity, and attention to detail helped make the workshop one of the best ever.”
Charles A. Selman, Society for Effective Lessons Learned Sharing Executive Committee Member

“Of all of his contributions, the most important one to me is the way we now approach ‘change.’ Our past taught us that we do things ‘because we’ve always done it that way.’ He taught us to pursue creative ideas, share lessons, and challenge the past. We now search for ways to improve every aspect of our job.”
Mark Lacy, Lead Operator, Colonial Pipeline Co.

“Charles exhibits a thoroughly genuine commitment to helping people become better at what they do…safer, smarter, more skilled…which raises the standards to which people hold themselves accountable, and in turn elevates the whole organization.”
Bill Scott, Senior Corporate Executive, Pipeline Industry.

“If anyone deserves credit for Operational Excellence it should be no one but YOU!!!! You have taken people that didn’t have a clue about what they were doing and have turned this company into believing we could achieve zero incidents. Without you, we would still be having careless errors and product spills. I think about the job you have done and I am very amazed that any one person could have done this. But you did, and did a great job at it.”
