Archive for September, 2011Console Operator Basic Skills Assessment – Why Is It Done in the Daytime?Several pipeline companies use the Console Operator Basic Skills Assessment(COBRA) as a way to identify whether an individual is suitable for a pipeline controller or operator job. It takes about a half day for the instruction on the assessment and the actual assessment. I think most companies schedule it at 8am. I have been wondering why it is not scheduled at midnight, and then it could also assess an individual’s ability to perform during a regular work time when most people are fatigued. This company has a qualified supervisor who can provide a break for the controllers on shift. I suggested that a good option during the break would be a walk outside. In the Wall St. Journal on August 30, I read that researchers are identifying things that can bring “optimal mental refreshment.” A walk where one takes in the sights and sounds of nature are very helpful. In one study, performance on memory and attention tests improved by 20% after those being tested took a break and walked through an arboretum. These human factors must be considered, along with technology. September Pressured and Fatigued-Color Posted September 10th, 2011 in 2011 Managing Fatigue Articles |
