Archive for August, 2011Recognizing the Signs of FatigueAugust Recognizing Signs of Fatigue This month’s article is about a difficult subject – recognizing the signs of fatigue before fatigue causes a problem on the job or on the road. Managers of pipeline control centers are looking for a test, a sure-fire method, a scientifically valid, and an EASY way to guarantee that every person who shows up for a shift is well-rested, alert, and ready to work 8 to 12 hours without increasing the risks of fatigue causing a problem. I’m just a pipeliner, not a scientist, but I don’t believe such a thing exists right now. There are some instruments that are used in tests, but I don’t know how practical they are for use in a control room at shift change time. I’ll keep looking for something. In the meantime, be sure to promote the preventative and recuperative measure of sleep. As a result, I was chronically tired since I worked 7 night and 7 evening shifts each month. I didn’t eat correctly for shift work. There wasn’t much emphasis on fatigue management education, the importance of sleep, and other relevant subjects. It’s different now as companies and government agencies are requiring training and education. I hope shift workers use wiser strategies than I did.
