Prone to Wander

“Why don’t you follow directions?,” she asked. It was not an appropriate time to reply that I am prone to wander. But I am prone to wander. There is a hymn that puts it, “prone to wander; Lord, I feel it.” Not only do I feel it, I enjoy it. Whether in a car or on foot, it provides pleasure to wander around. I don’t have to reach a specific destination in order to fell I have arrived at somewhere meaningful.

Some people find that trait frustrating. Others act like it is a character flaw. I rely on what Gandalf said in Lord of the Rings: “Not all who wander are lost.” Since I have been lost while wandering, the quote is reassuring.
